About the brand
Janod is a French brand specialising in wooden and cardboard toys, founded in 1970 when Louis Janod developed the wooden activity toy in the Jura region; the JURATOYS group was created in 2004 as the company developed internationally. Janod states it uses more and more FSC-certified wood and cardboard (not all), water-based paint preferred for early-learning toys for children under 3, who tend to put them in their mouths, and paint tested for discoloration to saliva for those toys. What the brand publishes
Janod's safety FAQ states all Janod toys put on the market are certified as conforming to current standards and regulations by approved and independent laboratories, chemically tested in accordance with the Toys Directive and REACH. Its universe page adds that certified laboratory tests are carried out regularly throughout production, new tests are performed whenever standards are updated, a 5-person France-based Quality team works alongside a second team close to production sites, and every product carries the CE mark. No lab is named, and no EN 71 number is stated on the FAQ — the page says “the European standard” without a number. Factory audits to BSCI and/or ICTI are social-compliance audits, not toy-safety lab tests. Sources: Janod safety FAQ, Janod universe page.
The honest caveats
Sweet Cocoon tables recall 23-210 — different models
Janod Sweet Cocoon Activity Tables, CPSC recall 23-210 (May 25, 2023): a silver metal bell can detach from its metal arch, choking hazard, free repair kit, about 5,080 sold in the US. The recalled models are J04402 and J04411 — NOT the listed Sweet Cocoon Multi-Activity Trolley (J04410) and NOT the Farm Pull-along Stacker Train (J03314). Same Sweet Cocoon line, different model; do not conflate them.
