About the brand

Melissa & Doug started in 1988 in a Connecticut garage, not a factory. Melissa and Doug Bernstein’s first product was an interactive sing-along video for children, which they sold by driving the family station wagon to educational toy stores around the Northeast. Weekends in those stores, talking with customers and children, turned up a growing interest in puzzles, and the Bernsteins made a tactile “fuzzy puzzle.” That is still the shape of the company: wooden puzzles and open-ended toys, designed in Wilton, Connecticut, with an educational test for every idea. Bernstein put it as a question the company still asks: what is a child learning from this?

The company is no longer independent. Spin Master completed its acquisition of Melissa & Doug on January 2, 2024, for $950 million, and the brand now sits inside Spin Master’s early-childhood portfolio. What did not change with the sale is the signature. From day one, the founders say, they have signed their names to every product they make, and they present that signature as the commitment behind the safety work: a “kid testing” program with age-appropriate children, testing at different production phases, employees stationed at the factories auditing, inspecting, and testing, and independent, certified, third-party laboratories. Paints and coatings, the part of a wooden toy a child mouths first, are tested frequently for heavy metals, lead, and phthalates, by the brand’s own account on its safety page.

That account is why this brand was Program-backed until October 2026, and why it is Documented now. A described testing program, however robust, is not a per-item document. The library below is.

Here is the part that makes this remarkable: US law only requires a CPC to be furnished on request. It does not require it to be posted, and it certainly does not require a searchable library. Melissa & Doug posts one anyway, for virtually its whole catalog. The library is organized by document type, US General Conformity Certificates, EU Declarations, UK Declarations, and more, and it is searched by file name, which means by model number.

The library is a viewer, not a stack of direct PDF links. You search, you preview, and you download from the viewer controls. That is why receipts on this site link to archived copies first: each is the same document, readable without wrestling the viewer, with the library kept as the original source. The per-item details, standard version, lab, report number, and place of manufacture, live on each product’s own page, where they belong.

The honest caveats

A different Melissa & Doug toy was recalled in September 2026, and it is not on this list.

On September 17, 2026, the CPSC announced recall 26-780: about 84,000 Melissa & Doug Lights & Sounds Fire Truck Activity Boards, sold exclusively at Target from July 2025 through August 2026, because the black fire-hose port can come loose and detach, posing a choking hazard. The company received 26 reports of the port coming loose and one report of a minor cut, and offered a replacement, a refund, or store credit. That toy is not the Sorting Barn and is not on this list. It belongs here because a brand page that only praises a brand’s paperwork would not be a receipts page. If you own a Fire Truck Activity Board, check the Recalls resource on this site.

How to check it yourself

Go to the productdocs library, search by model number, 30149 for the Sorting Barn, and open the General Conformity Certificate. Read the standard, the lab, and the report number, and compare them to the receipt above. The same library holds the EU and UK declarations for the same style, under the same model number.
