About the brand

LEGO began in 1932, when carpenter Ole Kirk Christiansen started making wooden toys in Billund, Denmark; the name comes from the Danish leg godt, “play well.” DUPLO, the larger-brick line for younger children, launched in 1969 — the line this page’s progression follows. Why this brand sits where it sits

LEGO hosts a Children’s Product Certificate for each individual item in its compliance system. Not a brand-level assurance page. Not a claim. A certificate, with the item number on it, naming the standard, the lab, and the test date. That is the entire reason LEGO sits in the Documented tier — and the standard everything else on this site is measured against.

Here is the part that makes this remarkable: US law only requires a CPC to be furnished on request. It does not require it to be posted. LEGO posts it anyway.

Every other brand on the list was asked the same question — show me — and answered with a page. LEGO answered with a document. That gap is the whole story of the receipts layer.

The honest caveats

It’s plastic. That’s a different filter.

DUPLO is rigid ABS. Hard plastic from a Documented brand is the low-risk end of plastics — the risk in plastic toys lives in soft, plasticized PVC. But material preference is a separate filter from the tier: the tier measures documentation, not material. A household avoiding plastics weighs that on its own terms, and the list keeps the two judgments visibly apart.

Stay in the DUPLO progression.

DUPLO is the toddler line — bigger bricks, 18 months and up. LEGO System sets with small parts are a different age story entirely. On this brand page, the progression is: Animal Train at 18 months, then the Brick Box at 24 months. Buy direct (LEGO.com or Target first-party) either way.

How to check it yourself

Go to LEGO’s compliance system, look up the item number, and read the certificate: standard, lab, test date. For every other brand, the operative tool is asking — you can demand the CPC. A brand that shares it on request is demonstrating exactly the transparency these tiers reward.
